How do laboratory water baths work?

Waterbaths are mainly used in chemical or biological laboratories to gently bring samples to a defined temperature and to keep it constant. The water bath in the laboratory is filled with water and electrically tempered. The samples are placed in a waterproof laboratory container in the water bath and thus heated continuously and evenly to the water temperature.

In such a process, water baths can maintain stable temperatures of around 100 C, while other laboratory baths, such as oil baths, can even reach temperatures of up to 250 C.

Laboratory water bath: Good for sensitive applications

Water baths are used in a wide variety of applications. Due to the high heat capacity of the water and the associated slow temperature adjustment, samples can be tempered particularly gently and precisely. For this reason, a water bath is particularly suitable for chemical laboratories where, for example, reaction controls are carried out. Waterbaths are also used in biological or microbiological environments with sensitive tasks, such as:

  • the performance of chemical reactions at defined temperatures,
  • the gentle thawing of samples
  • and the incubation of samples.

The right water bath for your laboratory Selection criteria

To help you find the right water bath for your needs, we would like to give you some selection criteria. The various models can differ in factors such as temperature control, volume or various additional functions. You should therefore consider the following aspects before buying a water bath for your laboratory:

Temperature range

Many devices differ in their temperature range. Most waterbaths can reach water temperatures from room temperature up to at least 95 C, some waterbaths can reach up to 100 C. Are you unsure which temperature range is most suitable for your laboratory? Our experts will be happy to advise you on this topic.

Accuracy and temperature stability

The required temperature stability is also of great importance when choosing a laboratory water bath. If you need very precise temperature control, you should opt for baths with low temperature variations of +/- 0.1 C, such as the JB Academy water bath from GRANT. In some cases, temperature constancy is achieved by continuous water flow. This allows small temperature differences to be reliably compensated.

The capacity of the water tank is of great importance for the applicability. With most devices you can choose from different sizes. The volume ranges from 0.8 litres to over 40 litres. If you need a particularly large water bath for your work area, we recommend, for example, taking a look at the baths in the Pura series from our manufacturer JULABO. This model is also available in larger sizes with a capacity of up to 36 litres.

Pipe and scoop functions

Many waterbaths also have a tube or shute function. Magnetic stirrers are often used as stirring systems, which ensure continuous turbulence of the water. In a shaking water bath, the samples are kept in motion by means of a linear or circular shaking motor, such as in the Wisd WSB shaking water bath from witeg.

Cooling and heating

Water baths with an additional cooling function can be used not only as a heating bath, but also as a cooling bath. This combination significantly extends the temperature range. In our MedSolut range, the JB Nova water bath from GRANToffers this function, with which you can achieve negative temperatures down to -47 C.
