How do fireproof storage safety cabinets work?

Flammable or explosive hazardous materials must be stored in such a way that they cannot be used by unauthorised persons and do not pose a risk to the environment. A safety cabinet for inflammable liquids must therefore protect the stored hazardous substances from inside and outside. A stable outer shell and uninterrupted technical ventilation are part of the basic equipment. In addition, in the event of a fire, the hazardous materials cabinet should be able to withstand the fire load for 30 to 90 minutes and protect the chemicals from the heat that occurs. This gives the employees working there time to leave the danger zone in the event of an accident until the fire brigade has brought the fire under control.

European standards for fire-protected safety cabinets

Due to the high hazard potential, there are very stringent legal requirements for the storage of flammable or explosive substances. The specific aspects are regulated in the applicable standards such as EN-14470-1 (flammable and combustible liquids) and EN14470-2 (compressed gas cylinders) . MedSolut.com safety cabinets comply with these strict regulations in all cases. The most important features to be considered are:

  • In the event of a fire, the cabinet doors must be able to close themselves in 20 seconds.

  • A foam seal shall seal the cabinet automatically in the event of fire.

  • Any leaks detected must be extinguished at 50 C.

  • Supply and exhaust air systems for technical ventilation are mandatory.

  • Ventilation openings must close automatically in the event of fire (guide temperature 70 C).

Fire protection in different resistance classes

The safety barriers differ in the respective fire protection class. This indicates how many minutes a cabinet must resist a fire load. There are four fire resistance classes:

- Type 15: Fire resistance for 15 min

- Type 30: Fire resistance for 30 min

- Type 60: Fire resistance for 60 min

- Type 90: Fire resistance for 90 min

At MedSolut.com you can purchase type 30 and type 90 safety cabinets. The Type 90 safety cabinet meets the requirements of the highest fire protection class.

Storage safety cabinets for the laboratory: design variants and accessories

A safety cabinet oder flammable storage cabinets for the laboratory must meet individual needs and the requirements that arise in the laboratory. Therefore, you can choose from a wide range of different safety cabinets. These differ in the following parameters, among others:

Dimensions

The dimensions of a hazardous material storage can vary greatly and depend on the quantity and size of the chemicals to be stored and the space available in the laboratory - most of them also come with adjustable shelves. At MedSolut.com you can choose between 60 cm (base cabinet) and 209 cm (tall cabinet) in height. You also have a choice of widths between 55 and 165 cm and a large number of variants in between.

Tren and drawers

As far as the opening options are concerned, you can choose between wing doors, which are either single or double doors, depending on the width of the wardrobe. There are also folding doors or drawer units.

Interior equipment

Depending on the chemicals to be stored and their containers, different interior fittings are available. You have the choice between trough shelves, compartment shelves and perforated shelves. In addition, these can have a pull-out mechanism that allows chemicals to be easily reached from the rear of the cabinet. Many cabinets may also have an additional bottom tray to catch any dangerous leaks, residues or other contaminants for easy removal.

Ventilation of a chemical safety cabinet

The ventilation of a safety cabinet is extremely important. Not only can chemicals escape through defective closures. Outgassing can also create a flammable and explosive atmosphere inside the cabinet. For this reason, it is mandatory that safety cabinets have uninterrupted ventilation

Natural ventilation

If only natural ventilation is possible, no ignition sources may be stored in such cabinets. In addition, due to the continuing health hazard, it is necessary to observe strict spacing rules. For this purpose, the cabinet and the area around it are divided into explosion hazard zones. The inside of the cabinet must be marked as Ex zone 1 and the area at a distance of 2.5 metres around the safety cabinet must be marked as hazardous area 2 (Ex zone 2).

Exhaust air to the outside

With a technical exhaust air system, the air inside the cabinet is exchanged at regular intervals and continuously with a ventilation system. Several variants are possible. The exhaust air system can be routed separately to the outside via a fan or a ventilation attachment with an exhaust air pipe. However, it is also possible to integrate it into an existing ventilation system. This variant is the most cost-intensive, but it is suitable for the removal of any hazardous substance vapours.

Recirculation filters

Recirculating air filter attachments are the safest type of ventilation, but they are only intended for vapours from solvents. This certified system has continuous electronic monitoring of the exhaust air volume. Ex-zoning is no longer necessary. The different ventilation methods are compared in the following table:

Natural venting Exhaust air ducting to the outside Recirculation filter attachment
Low cost High cost Low cost
Health hazard present No health hazard No health hazard
No ignition sources Complete elimination of hazardous material vapors Safe elimination of solvent vapors
