Herolab refrigerated centrifuge HiCen XL
The Herolab refrigerated centrifuge HiCen XL is ideal for use in high-performance laboratories that need to centrifuge large sample volumes at precise temperature conditions. With an impressive capacity of 6 × 1000 ml, it is particularly suitable for applications in biotechnological research, industrial analysis and pharmaceutical production processes. Compared to other high-performance refrigerated centrifuges, it offers a robust design and flexible rotor options that enable a wide range of application scenarios. However, similarly equipped to the [Thermo Scientific Sorvall LYNX 4000], it has a higher maximum speed and an extended temperature range, making it indispensable in demanding processes.
Performance features and range of functions
This high-performance centrifuge has been specially developed for users who require high capacities, flexible rotor options and reliable cooling. Thanks to the brushless induction drive, the centrifuge impresses with its long running times and low-maintenance performance. Users also benefit from the following features and technical details:
- Maximum capacity: 6 × 1000 ml
- Variable speed from 500 to 20,500 min-¹ (adjustable in steps of 100)
- High maximum g-value of 50,743 × g (adjustable in increments of 10)
- Operates at temperatures from -20 °C to +40 °C (in 1 °C increments)
- 9 acceleration and deceleration ramps for gentle sample operation
- Microprocessor control with large touchscreen display
- Maintenance-free, brushless induction drive
- Many rotor selection options including 14 angle and 4 swing-out rotors
In addition to the robust stainless steel chamber, the model scores points with built-in armor reinforcement, which provides additional safety at high speeds. The 4-fold lid lock, an automatic emergency release mechanism and imbalance detection also contribute to safe operation. If you are processing particularly sensitive samples, you can opt for optional inert gas purging (e.g. with nitrogen) or water cooling, which reduces heat dissipation into the room. Password routines and GLP-compliant data management also increase traceability and process reliability.
It is important that the Herolab HiCen XL refrigerated centrifuge comes to a standstill quickly thanks to its dynamic braking system and that the samples are not affected by unnecessary temperature fluctuations or abrupt braking. Rapid pre-cooling is also possible. This means that sensitive substances such as enzymes, proteins, cells or sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients remain stable, which increases the reproducibility of experimental and industrial processes. Similar to the [Hettich rotor series R200A], flexible rotor solutions allow the use of different sample vessels to maximize throughput.
Application examples in the laboratory environment
- Purification of plasmids: Thanks to the high capacity, large volumes of liquid can be efficiently clarified or isolated.
- Sedimentation of cells: Cell culture fluids can be processed on a large scale, which is important in bioproduction, vaccine production and research laboratories, for example.
- Separation of protein precipitates: The combination of precise temperature control and high centrifugal acceleration makes the device ideal for protein precipitation.
- Separation of chemical suspensions: Many industrial and research laboratories separate particles from reaction mixtures to obtain pure substances for further processing.
FAQs
How is the centrifuge cooled?
The centrifuge is equipped with CFC-free coolant technology and can be set between -20 °C and +40 °C. This ensures that sensitive samples can be processed in a temperature-sensitive manner.
Which rotors can be used
The user can choose from 14 angle rotors and 4 swing-out rotors. The APRI system automatically recognizes the installed rotor and adjusts the permissible speed and acceleration accordingly.
Does the device offer sufficient protection against imbalance?
Yes, the centrifuge detects mechanical imbalances immediately and switches itself off automatically. This prevents damage to the device and the samples.
Is continuous operation possible
Thanks to the brushless induction motor and efficient cooling, the centrifuge can also be used for longer running times (HOLD function). This makes it suitable for complex sedimentation processes over several hours.
What export and documentation options are available
GLP-compliant data management is available as an option. This allows operating data to be recorded and exported in common formats. The display can also be configured with password protection to regulate access.
Conclusion
The Herolab HiCen XL refrigerated centrifuge impresses in the demanding environment of biotechnological, pharmaceutical and industrial analysis with its high performance, flexible equipment options and maximum reliability. Its wide range of rotor options, precise temperature control and safe design combined with extensive safety features make it an excellent choice for laboratories that need to centrifuge large volumes quickly and coolly - from routine applications to specialized processes.
